Earthwork Programs: Wilderness Skills and Nature Awareness

Earthwork Testimonials

Noah loved attending Frank's camp last summer. His eyes lit up with wonder and enthusiasm every time he talked about his experience, and he told everyone he met, "It was great." Frank provides a warm and accepting environment where modern children can reconnect with ancient traditions and earth skills. The children who attend his programs really do discover a sense of belonging to the earth, and in our fast
paced world, this is truly a precious gift. Children also become grounded in their bodies through sensory activities, and gain a greater social awareness as they learn to work and play with others. I can't say enough about Frank's dedication and commitment to his work with children. My son loved every minute!

This has been a valuable opportunity for many of our students who have worked with Frank at the Hitchcock Center for the Environment and Hawk Circle.

I have always respected nature, but before beginning the Heron program, I didn't realize how much I was taking for granted. With Frank's guidance I have begun to understand and be thankful for the mysteries of nature. I'm eager to learn more about Bird Language, Plant Identification, Shelter Building, Animal Tracking, and to Master Fire by Friction. My goal in the Heron Homeschool program is to learn to become invisible in the woods, so I can be one with my environment and to share this knowledge with others.

One of my favorite "touches" of the program is the ubiquitous, almost unconscious, dedication to being thankful. It happened so often and so easily; that it flows into and over your life, and you can't help but be thankful for things.

Earthwork Intern

We believe that play in a natural setting is of the highest importance for the development of healthy and happy children. The rich stimulation of the environment engages them fully, tests their strengths, feeds their curiosity, and sometimes inspires them with awe. We've found that in observing the world, children often become more compassionate and attuned to others, (including other species) and exertion and play is relaxing.

For these reasons we were most enthusiastic about Frank's plans to conduct field days on our land in West Northfield. This past year, once a month the "fishers in the forest" children, have explored the woods, sometimes quietly, sometimes not, with the guidance of trained naturalist. They've braved all kinds of weather with no complaints, made shelters, made fires, listened to stories, tracked and are always happy and dirty at the end of the day. Their knowledge of the natural world increases exponentially, without them even particularly noticing. They mostly just have a blast. We highly recommend Frank's program and encourage you to find out more about them.

Sincerely,

Bill and Christine Copeland

Dear Frank hello!  Thank you so much for presenting for us. You did a great job, and it was truly a pleasure having you here. Your workshops were such a nice addition to our schedule. As I mentioned before, I would love to have your return next year to present! Both Jeff and I feel this was the best gifts of the earth event yet! We have received nothing but positive feedback from the participants. As I have mentioned in the past the majority of our success with this weekend is due to the talent, energy and heart you and all the other presenters put into your workshops. Thanks Frank for excepting the last-minute invitation to present! Your support is much appreciated.

How do you feel your child has benefited by participating in this program?

Cultivating a deep appreciation for nature has lifelong benefits; I think once it takes root it never stops growing or ceases to amaze. It is a great gift to understand the wonder and small things all around us.

- Nicole Reynolds, Homeschool Parent

Dear Frank,

We are extremely pleased to have found the EarthWork Heron Program for Nate. What a fantastic program to incorporate into his homeschool curriculum. Thank you for your commitment to sharing your knowledge of the world around us, and for your insightful, caring guidance. The program has opened a new door for Nate, a new perception of the natural world around him, and an awareness of his place within it.

He is excited to have earned the Path of the Turtle, and can't wait to continue in the next session.

Again, thank you.

Jeff and Nichole Reynolds, Homeschool Parents
